Buffalo, NY (March 12, 2013) – Tifft Nature Preserve is the place to be to welcome spring!  Spring Egg-stravaganza! An annual celebration of animals that hatch from eggs will take place on Friday, March 29, 2013 at Tifft Nature Preserve, the environmental education site of the Buffalo Museum of Science.

Erie County Legislators Lynne Dixon, Joseph Lorigo, John Mills and Edward Rath, in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension – Erie County, are pleased to announce that two informational meetings to highlight the many exciting programs available through 4-H will be held in November. With an extensive list of opportunities available to youths, ages 5-19, the informational meetings will discuss what programs are offered and how to get involved.

National Junior Swine Association Regional Hog Show comes to The Fairgrounds

For the first time in Hamburg, the National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) is bringing the Eastern Regional Hog Show  to The Fairgrounds this weekend. 

This show will be host to 180 hogs shown by juniors ages 21 and under from several states including Michigan, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Delaware.  Six exhibitors are from the local area (Hamburg, east Aurora and Boston).  A total of $11,000 in cash is being awarded this weekend, plus a one year lease for an EXISS trailer to the Champion Gilt.    A complete schedule of events is available online.

Maddie, a 13 year old from Illinois, was the first early entry to arrive on Thursday with 9 hogs.  She has shown in the Eastern Regional Hog Show for the past 7 years – upon their arrival, Maddie and her parents were quite excited about the facility.

  • Enjoy SPCA wildlife department presentations with live birds at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 PM
  • Take a guided winter nature walk at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 PM
  • Listen to winter nature stories at 1:45, 2:45 and 3:45 PM
  • Kids can make winter nature crafts, such as pinecone bird feeders, snowglobes and track pictures
  • Test out snowshoes or cross-country skis for free in our demonstration area
  • Rent snowshoes and take a longer walk on the trails
  • Create snow sculptures around the Education Center
  • Try out the energy bike, and learn how to go "green" in the winter
  • Learn about ice fishing and winter survival techniques
  • Enjoy hot drinks and snacks for sale.

Bring the family to stretch their legs and see what Tifft is like in the wintertime. We’ll end by having a warm drink in Tifft’s cabin. *Snowshoeing is weather permitting.
