Dr. Susan Baker Appointed to Editorial Boards of Pediatrics & Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology

Susan Baker, MD, PhD, Co-Chief, Digestive Diseases and Nutrition Center, Women & Children’s Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics, University at Buffalo, has been appointed to the editorial board of both Pediatrics and the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition starting January 2011. Dr. Baker’s term on each board is for 2 years.

Congratulations to Dr. Baker for earning these prominent appointments. This is a wonderful tribute to Dr. Baker that positively promotes the reputation of Women & Children’s Hospital with the University at Buffalo as a leading clinical and research center.

Kaleida Health Invites Women to the Entertaining and Informational Spirit Girls’ Night Out

Women can discover secrets to better breast health, vascular health and better rest at this year’s entertaining and informational Spirit Girls’ Night Out SM  hosted by Kaleida Health in partnership with Reader’s Digest, ResMed and the Vascular Disease Foundation on Thursday, October 7 from 6-9pm in the courtyard at the Millennium Hotel at 2040 Walden Avenue, Buffalo 14225. 

Health education, health screenings, and fun activities including a fashion show, great food, and giveaways will be woven throughout the evening to emphasize the importance of awareness of all of the health issues affecting women today. Free Guided Walk in Emery Park on Saturday, Sept. 18

The first of six free Fall Guided Walks in Erie County Parks will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at Emery Park, according to a statement released by Legislator John J. Mills, R-District 13. Part of “Be Active Erie County!”, the purpose of the program is to promote healthy, family fun. 

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Emery Park, 2084 Emery Road, at the field house. The walk will follow at 10 a.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about how to get healthy and stay healthy, including information about bone density, glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, nutrition, and physical activity. Various free health screening opportunities will also be available. In addition, a free gift will be distributed.

March of Dimes Celebrates Annual Signature Chefs Auction

The March of Dimes, Western New York Division presents the 2010 Signature Chefs Auction, “Feathers & Flair, A March of Dimes Monte Carlo Affair” on Friday, October 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. Western New York’s finest chefs will offer their signature dishes coupled with wine tastings from regional wineries and accompanied by an array of unique live and silent auction items and entertainment. Everyone is invited to attend the evening, which raises money and awareness to save babies from prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality.

This year’s event promises to be an elegant night with some of the best restaurants in town. Featured dishes will be prepared by Alex’s Place, Blue Buffalo, Chef’s Restaurant, Fiamma Steak House, Harry’s Harbour Place Grille, Koi, La Scala, My Tomato Pie, Protocol Restaurant and Rich Renaissance Catering. Wine selections will be offered by Merritt Estate Winery.

Pet Connection Seeks Vendors for Popular Event

Have a business you'd like to promote or a product you’d like to sell? Pet Connection Programs Inc. is looking for vendors to participate in Tails on the Trails, their annual dog-walk fundraiser. The 2011 event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4. The cost to vendors is just $25, and tables, chairs, tents and publicity are provided. Congressman Higgins Announces Application Period for SAFER Federal Fire Grants

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the application window for grants provided through the Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) program is now open.   SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing a department’s ability to comply with federal standards that ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards.  This year Congress appropriated approximately $420 million for the SAFER program. 

“I encourage local companies to apply for funding through this federal grant to help support outreach and recruitment of the next generation of first responders,” said Higgins. 

HEALTHeLINK Unveils $16.1 Million Beacon Community Initiative to Fight Diabetes

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In June 2010, HEALTHeLINK received the largest Beacon Community Award in the United States from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Beacon Project was created to help communities use health information technology to forge cooperation and use resources effectively toward local priority health goals.
