Lackawanna Crash Shuts Down Route 5; Corrections Officer Charged

LACKAWANNA, NY - A corrections officer is now facing DWI and vehicular assault charges after an accident that left a passenger in his vehicle with a severe head injury.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday night and shut down Route 5 for at least 5 hours.

Police say Randall Labedz, 48, of Hamburg, was heading home  with his wife and another couple when the Jeep he was driving collided with an on-coming tractor trailer. Labedz was towing a boat and was headed west on Rt. 5 when he went off the right side of the road, apparently overcompensated and crossed three lanes of on-coming traffic before striking the truck.

Denise Lufland, 41, of Buffalo is in critical condition in the trauma unit at ECMC. Her husband was not hurt.

Labedz and his wife were both treated and released from ECMC.

Labedz appeared on the charges in Lackawanna City Court Monday where bail was set at $5,000.
