Lackawanna Crash Shuts Down Route 5; Corrections Officer Charged

LACKAWANNA, NY - A corrections officer is now facing DWI and vehicular assault charges after an accident that left a passenger in his vehicle with a severe head injury.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday night and shut down Route 5 for at least 5 hours.

Labedz was towing a boat and was headed west on Rt. 5 when he went off the right side of the road, apparently overcompensated and crossed three lanes of on-coming traffic before striking the truck.

Labedz and his wife were both treated and released from ECMC.

Labedz appeared on the charges in Lackawanna City Court Monday where bail was set at $5,000.
