Hamburg Woman Gets 22-Life in Boyfriend's Death

BUFFALO, NY-A Hamburg woman will be spending the next 22 years to life behind bars for the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend.

State Supreme Court Justice Russell Buscaglia sentenced 58-year-old Linda Campanella Wednesday morning.

A jury found Campanella guilty of second degree murder earlier this summer.

She was convicted of stabbing Herman Forthman in the stomach at his home on Main Street in Hamburg back in October, 2008

Hamburg Wins Prize for School Lunch Program

ALBANY, NY-The Hamburg School Districts is one of eight districts in the state to receive a 2010 Best Practices Award for their efforts using food from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Those foodstuffs include fresh produce, meat and dairy products, as well as canned goods.

"This program is a perfect example of New York State's commitment to healthy living," said NYS Office of General Services Commission, John Eagan. "These awards recognize the creativity used in school lunch programs to make healthy eating an integral part of a student's day."

AT Charlotte Elementary School in Hamburg, they were committed to reinforcing healthy eating and snack choices with their students. For instance during "Veggie Week" last March, the district tried some new recipes, including "Sunshine Bars" made with mashed sweet potatoes.

As a grand prize winner, Hamburg schools will receive a $5,000 cash award.

Metro to Provide Extra Service to Erie County Fair

BUFFALO, NY - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro will provide service on the 36 Hamburg and 14 Abbott bus routes to the Erie County Fair and Exposition from Wednesday Aug. 11 through Sunday Aug. 22.

On weekdays, Route 36 Hamburg buses depart for the Mohawk and Ellicott Streets, starting at 8:37 am and approximately every hour after that. The last bus will leave around 9:43 pm.

Buses returning to Buffalo start departing the grounds at 10:11 am and continue hourly up to 11:02 pm. Buses stop at both McKinley Ave. and South Park entrances.

On Saturdays, the first bus at 36 Hamburg leaves downtown Buffalo at 9:15 am. The last bus leaves the fairgrounds for Buffalo at 9:30 pm. Sunday service to the fair starts at 11 am with the last bus leaving the fair at 9:50 pm.

Wegman's Chefs to Compete in Final Cooking Competition

BUFFALO, NY-- Wegman's grocery store chefs will be competing in the final phase of  the 'secret, hometown' ingredient cookoff challenge.

The competition is taking place on Saturday, August 14 at the McKinley Wegman's location. This will be the final throwdown among the six finalists.

The cooking will take place from noon untill 1 p.m. followed by the judging.

The event is open to the public.

Cattaraugus Co. Woman Named Erie County Ultimate Fairgoer

HAMBURG,NY-A Cattaraugus County woman loves the Erie County Fair so much, she was named Tuesday as this year's Ultimate Fairgoer.

Along with her husband, Paulette Smith of Hindsdale camps out in their VW bus for the duration of the fair and takes in the sights, sounds and smells every day of the fair's 12-day run.

Smith was nominated by Jack O'Connor, the Trailer Park Manager at the fair. "They continually stop by the trailer park office to tell us what a wonderful time they are having, and what amazing things the fair has to offer", said O'Connor.

For being this year's winner, Smith will receive a pass for herself and a guest to the fair, as well as two admission passes good for the 2010 NYS Fair in Syracuse and any other county or youth fairs in the state. 

Free Car Seat Safety Check Saturday

DERBY, NY-Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon,  the Erie County Sheriff's Department and the North Evans Volunteer Firefighters to hold a free car seat safety check this weekend.

It's set to take place from 10 AM - 2 PM, Saturday, August 14th at the Highland Hose Volunteer Fire Company located at 1 George Nablo Parkway in Derby. The seat checks will take place in the parking lot.

DERBY, (WGRZ) -- Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon has partnered with the Sheriff's office and North Evans Volunteer Fire to hold a free car seat safety check.

"Reports have shown that more than 90 percent of car seats are installed improperly," said Legislator Dixon.

The check will take place from on Saturday, August 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m at the Highland Hose Fire Company, 1 George Nablo Parkway in Derby.
