Spending in New York Legislature Primaries on the Rise

By JOSEPH SPECTOR
Gannett Albany Bureau

ALBANY -- Primary races for some state legislative seats are getting expensive in advance of Tuesday's vote, a review of campaign-finance records shows.

In fact, spending on some races is among the highest in recent history in advance of legislative primaries, according to the analysis by the New York Public Interest Research Group.

In a Democratic Senate primary in Buffalo, Sen. Bill Stachowski, D-Buffalo, spent $177,555 from mid-July through early September, but he has been outspent by his Democratic challenger, Tim Kennedy, who has spent more than $216,000.  The combined total of nearly $400,000 is the third most since 2000, NYPIRG found.
